STEM Sports Pop-Up Event: The Science Behind Soccer

On December 20, 2024, STEMpoweringHER hosted an exciting pop-up event at Desert Horizon and Mountain View Park in Scottsdale, Arizona, where kids and parents came together to explore the fascinating connection between soccer and STEM. Using Module 3 – Measuring Throw-Ins from the STEM Sports® curriculum, participants discovered how science and math play a role in one of soccer’s most essential moves: the throw-in.

The event featured hands-on activities where participants tried various throw-in techniques, experimenting with standing and kneeling positions to see how body movements impacted accuracy and distance. Using soccer balls and measuring tools, they recorded data and analyzed the physics of force, angles, and motion. 

This dynamic activity turned the soccer field into an interactive classroom, sparking curiosity and teamwork.

A poster board provided additional insights into the mechanics of throw-ins, highlighting STEM principles like trajectory and force application. Families were excited to see how STEM connects to everyday activities, with kids leading the experiments and parents cheering them on—or even joining in!

Thanks to the collaboration with STEM Sports® and the enthusiasm of our volunteers and participants, the event was a huge success. It showcased how STEM concepts are embedded in sports, encouraging young learners to see math and science in a new and exciting way.
